Overview

Short-chain fatty acid-producing bacteria are a diverse group of gut microbiota taxa capable of fermenting dietary fibers and host-derived glycans into short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), primarily acetate, propionate, and butyrate. These metabolites play essential roles in maintaining intestinal health by regulating epithelial barrier function and modulating immune responses. The most abundant phyla containing these bacteria include Firmicutes (notably genera such as Ruminococcus), Bacteroidetes (including Bacteroides), Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria, Verrucomicrobia (Akkermansia), among others. Their abundance is influenced by diet—especially prebiotic intake—and their deficiency has been linked to several diseases including inflammatory bowel disease, colorectal cancer, cardiometabolic disorders and systemic inflammation. While they are critical for health maintenance and represent an important axis for therapeutic intervention through microbiome modulation or prebiotic/probiotic supplementation strategies rather than direct drug targeting as with classical molecular targets like receptors or enzymes.
