Target intelligence / Profile preview
Short-chain fatty acids production refers to the microbial metabolic process in which the gut microbiota ferments indigestible dietary components—primarily fibers and resistant starches—in the large intestine, resulting in the generation of volatile fatty acids with fewer than six carbons. The principal short-chain fatty acids produced are acetate (C2), propionate (C3), and butyrate (C4), which together account for 90–95% of total SCFAs present in the colon. These metabolites play crucial roles in shaping the intestinal environment, serving as energy sources for both host cells and microbes, modulating immune responses, maintaining colonic health, and participating in host signaling mechanisms including those affecting brain function via the gut-brain axis. Altered levels or patterns of SCFA production have been implicated in a range of diseases such as inflammatory conditions, metabolic syndromes, neurological disorders, and gastrointestinal pathologies[1][2][3]. Note: "Short-chain fatty acids production" is not a single molecular target such as a receptor or enzyme; rather it describes a metabolic process carried out by diverse microbial enzymes within complex communities. Therefore it is not considered a therapeutic target per se but rather an important biological pathway or functional output relevant to health and disease states.
