Short ragweed pollen allergens are proteins found in the pollen of *Ambrosia artemisiifolia* (short ragweed), a major cause of seasonal allergic rhinitis. The most well-characterized allergens are Amb a 1 (a pectate lyase) and Amb a 11 (a cysteine protease). These allergens trigger IgE-mediated allergic reactions in sensitized individuals, leading to symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, and asthma exacerbation. Allergen extracts are used for diagnostic skin testing and subcutaneous immunotherapy to reduce allergy symptoms.
Allergen immunotherapy aims to induce immune tolerance by gradually increasing exposure to the allergen, leading to a shift from Th2 to Th1 immune responses and production of blocking IgG antibodies.
