Overview

Short transmembrane mitochondrial protein 1 (STMP1), encoded by the *STMP1* gene, is a 47-amino acid microprotein localized to the inner mitochondrial membrane. It regulates the assembly and activity of respiratory chain complex III and supercomplexes, contributing to efficient mitochondrial electron transport and cellular energy production. It is cardiac-enriched but expressed across tissues and evolutionarily conserved from fish to mammals. STMP1 is homologous to mitolamban and is implicated in mitochondrial bioenergetics, cardiac stress response, inflammasome activation, and tumor cell metastasis. Dysregulation of STMP1 causes mitochondrial dysfunction and is implicated in diseases such as cardiomyopathy, cancer, and potentially neurodegeneration[2][3][6][7].
