Sialic Acid Biosynthesis Pathway

Molecular classification
Metabolic Pathway
01

Overview

The sialic acid biosynthesis pathway is a conserved metabolic route in animals and some microorganisms responsible for the production of sialic acids, a family of nine-carbon acidic monosaccharides. The most common form in humans is N-acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac). Sialic acids are typically found at the terminal positions of glycan chains on glycoproteins and glycolipids, playing crucial roles in cell-cell interaction, immune response modulation, pathogen recognition, and cancer progression.
