Target intelligence / Profile preview
Sialic acid-containing receptors are glycan structures present on the surface of vertebrate cells, most abundantly at the terminal positions of glycoproteins and glycolipids. They mediate cell–cell interactions, modulate immune responses via interactions with Siglecs, and serve as attachment points for various pathogens, including viruses, bacteria, and parasites. Structural diversity in linkage types and modifications contributes to their functional specificity. They are important therapeutic targets, especially in the context of viral infections.
Inhibition of viral binding or release by blocking sialic acid interactions. Lectins can also be used to target sialoglycans
