Sialyl Lewis A epitope on Carbohydrate Antigen 19-9 (sLea/CA19-9)

Target
sLea/CA19-9
Molecular classification
Carbohydrate antigen, Glycan, Glycolipid/Glycoprotein component
01

Overview

Sialyl Lewis A (sLea) is a tetrasaccharide carbohydrate antigen, specifically the sialylated form of the Lewis^a antigen (CA19-9). It acts as a ligand for E-selectin and plays a role in cell adhesion and hematogenous metastasis, especially in cancer cells. It is widely used as a serum tumor marker, particularly for pancreatic cancer, but its utility is limited by false positives and negatives and its absence in Lewis antigen-negative individuals.

Mechanism of action

Antibodies targeting sLeA have been shown preclinically to mediate tumor clearance through immune mechanisms involving Fc-FcγR interactions.
