Overview

Sialylated laminins are forms of laminin glycoproteins that have been modified by the addition of sialic acid residues through sialylation, a post-translational modification essential for proper cell–cell and cell–matrix interactions[2][5]. Laminins are typically composed of heterotrimeric chains (alpha, beta, gamma) and form an integral scaffold for basement membranes in all animal tissues[5]. Sialylation alters the physical and biochemical properties of laminins, modulating their interactions with cells, other extracellular matrix molecules, and pathogens[2][3][1]. For example, sialylated laminins can function as viral attachment factors, facilitating the entry of some viruses such as the H-1 parvovirus into cancer cells[1]. Changes in sialylation patterns in the extracellular matrix are associated with pathological processes including cancer progression and may affect immune evasion[3]. The preferred scientific approach would be to specify the particular laminin isoform (e.g., Laminin-211, Laminin-332) and the type of sialylation when discussing functional or therapeutic roles.
