Signal recognition particle 14 kDa protein (SRP14) is a protein subunit of the signal recognition particle (SRP) complex, a universally conserved ribonucleoprotein responsible for recognizing and targeting specific proteins to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) in eukaryotes[2][4][5]. SRP14, together with the SRP9 protein, forms a heterodimer that binds the Alu domain of the SRP RNA, forming the elongation arrest domain of the complex, which is required for pausing translation of nascent polypeptides until proper targeting to the ER membrane is achieved[1][3][4]. The SRP14 protein is localized primarily in the nucleus and as part of the SRP mediates the co-translational targeting of secretory and membrane proteins[4][5][6]. The main known function of SRP14 is in RNA binding and participation in the SRP-driven pathway for protein translocation across or insertion into the ER membrane; it does not have direct enzymatic, transporter, or receptor functions and is not currently a therapeutic target.
