Molecular classification
Other (Pseudogene; not a protein-coding gene)

Overview

Signal recognition particle 68kDa pseudogene 1 (SRP68P1) is a non-protein-coding gene (pseudogene) found in humans, located in the chromosomal region associated with Smith-Magenis syndrome on 17p11.2. Unlike the functional SRP68 gene, which encodes part of the signal recognition particle essential for protein targeting to the endoplasmic reticulum, SRP68P1 does not produce a functional protein and has no established role in disease or therapy. Its presence reflects a genomic duplication event but does not correspond to any known biological activity, pathological implication, or pharmacological relevance. SRP68P1 is best regarded as a pseudogene, not a therapeutic target. Its nomenclature and associations reflect its location within the Smith-Magenis syndrome critical region, but it is not functionally involved in the syndrome or other biological processes.
