Signal recognition particle 7SL RNA (7SL RNA)

Target
7SL RNA
Molecular classification
Long noncoding RNA, Structural RNA, Ribonucleoprotein complex component
01

Overview

Signal recognition particle 7SL RNA is a highly conserved noncoding RNA forming the backbone of the signal recognition particle, a ribonucleoprotein complex universally required for proper cotranslational targeting of secretory and membrane proteins. 7SL RNA functions as a scaffold coordinating the assembly of several SRP proteins (SRP9, SRP14, SRP19, SRP54, SRP68, and SRP72), facilitates recognition of signal sequences on emerging polypeptide chains, and plays a central role in halting translation and guiding the ribosome to the ER membrane for protein translocation[1][2][3][4][5]. Mutations or dysregulation of 7SL RNA and SRP can contribute to cancer and possibly other diseases, primarily through interaction with regulatory elements such as p53, but it is not a direct therapeutic target[3]. The RN7SL3 gene is either a pseudogene or an alternate locus annotation of the same family, primarily catalogued in databases for completeness[1][3].

Mechanism of action

Not applicable (No known drugs directly target RN7SL3 or 7SL RNA. SRP-mediated processes may be disrupted by broad inhibitors of translation, but these are not specific to RN7SL RNA.)

Disease associations
