Signal sequence receptor subunit 1 is a glycosylated membrane protein located in the endoplasmic reticulum, encoded by the SSR1 gene. It forms part of the signal sequence receptor (SSR) or translocon-associated protein (TRAP) complex—especially as the alpha/SSRA subunit—which plays an essential role in the cotranslational translocation and integration of nascent proteins across the ER membrane. The SSR complex physically associates with the Sec61 protein-conducting channel to facilitate translocation of proteins that contain signal sequences. Beyond its canonical role in protein trafficking, SSR1 is increasingly recognized as a biomarker relevant for cancer prognosis, especially in hepatocellular carcinoma, and is being explored as a potential target for future therapy due to its association with tumor proliferation and immune infiltration[1][2][5][6].
