Overview

Signal transducer and activator of transcription 5A (STAT5A) is a member of the STAT family of transcription factors involved in transmitting signals from cytokines and growth factors to the cell nucleus, where it promotes gene transcription. STAT5A is activated by phosphorylation in response to cytokines like IL2, IL3, IL7, GM-CSF, erythropoietin, thrombopoietin, and growth hormones. It regulates key processes such as cell proliferation, survival, and differentiation, and plays a vital role in mammary gland development and immune cell function. STAT5A is implicated in the pathogenesis of several cancers, including leukemia, breast, prostate, and colorectal cancer, acting as both prognostic biomarker and therapeutic target, though most current STAT5 inhibitors do not distinguish between STAT5A and its closely related paralog STAT5B.
