Signal transducer and activator of transcription protein 1 (STAT1) is a transcription factor that mediates cellular responses to cytokines and growth factors. It plays a critical role in immune response, cell survival, and apoptosis. STAT1 is activated through the JAK-STAT pathway, leading to dimerization, nuclear translocation, and regulation of gene expression. Dysregulation of STAT1 can lead to immunodeficiencies, altered susceptibility to infections, or contribute to autoimmune conditions. Unlike some other STAT family members, activated STAT1 generally suppresses tumor growth.
