Overview

Silicate ions are small, inorganic anions derived from the dissolution of silicate-containing solids such as glasses, ceramics, or minerals in aqueous environments[2][6]. In the context of biomaterials, controlled silicate ion release can promote biological functions such as the proliferation and differentiation of osteoblasts and angiogenesis, mainly by mimicking hypoxic conditions and stabilizing hypoxia-inducible factors (HIF), or enhancing the expression of growth factors like VEGF in endothelial cells[3][4]. These effects make silicate ion-releasing materials attractive for bone repair, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine. However, "silicate ion release" itself is not a molecular target but a chemical process, and the silicate ion is not a druggable protein, receptor, or enzyme.
