Similar to zinc finger protein 682 pseudogene

Molecular classification
Pseudogene, Zinc finger protein-like (nonfunctional)

Overview

Similar to zinc finger protein 682 pseudogene is a human pseudogene (ENSG00000253803) provisionally named LOC728587. Pseudogenes are genomic DNA sequences similar to functional genes, but due to mutations, they generally do not produce functional proteins. This gene is named for its sequence similarity to zinc finger protein 682, a class of proteins typically involved in DNA binding and transcriptional regulation. Zinc finger proteins are encoded by a large family in the human genome and are characterized by the zinc finger structural motif, which permits nucleic acid binding. However, as a pseudogene, this locus is not believed to encode a functional transcript or protein, although, in rare cases, pseudogenes can have regulatory roles, such as acting as microRNA decoys or regulators of gene expression[7]. There is no current evidence that this pseudogene encodes a functioning protein, nor that it is a therapeutic target. The function, disease association, and clinical relevance of this specific pseudogene are not established in the scientific literature.
