The sinonasal mucosa is the thin, moist lining of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. Composed mostly of pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium and goblet cells, it functions to condition inhaled air by humidifying, warming, and filtering it. The mucosa produces mucus that traps particulate matter and pathogens, facilitating their removal via mucociliary clearance. It hosts immune cells (macrophages, lymphocytes) and participates in defense against respiratory infections. Diseases affecting the sinonasal mucosa include rhinitis, sinusitis, and sinonasal tumors; treatments often target inflammation or infection within this tissue[1][3][5]. If clarification or a molecular target within the sinonasal mucosa is needed (e.g., "EGFR in sinonasal carcinoma"), please specify, as "sinonasal mucosa" by itself does not meet standard molecular target conventions[2][4].
Corticosteroids reduce inflammation by inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokine production in mucosal cells. Decongestants vasoconstrict blood vessels in mucosa, reducing swelling. Antihistamines block histamine receptors, preventing allergy mediator action in mucosa. Saline provides physical cleansing and humidification.
