Overview

Skeletal and cardiac muscle cells, collectively known as striated muscle cells, are specialized biological units designed for contraction and force generation. Skeletal muscle cells are multinucleated fibers responsible for voluntary movement and posture, while cardiac muscle cells (cardiomyocytes) are branched cells that facilitate the rhythmic, involuntary pumping of the heart (StatPearls, 2023). These cells are not individual molecular targets but rather complex systems containing numerous therapeutic targets such as ion channels, G protein-coupled receptors, and contractile proteins (NIH, 2023). Pathologies involving these cells include muscular dystrophies, heart failure, and various myopathies. Pharmacological intervention usually involves modulating excitation-contraction coupling or metabolic pathways within these specific cell populations (PubMed, 2022). Monitoring the health of these cells is often performed via serum biomarkers like troponins or creatine kinase. Safety concerns associated with drugs affecting these cells include the risk of rhabdomyolysis or cardiac arrhythmias.
