Overview

Skeletal muscle is a type of striated muscle tissue that is responsible for voluntary movements, posture maintenance, joint stabilization, and heat generation. It is composed of bundles of muscle fibers (myofibers), which contain myofibrils made up of sarcomeres (the basic contractile units). Contraction is initiated at the neuromuscular junction via acetylcholine signaling, leading to actin-myosin interactions and muscle shortening.
