Skeletal muscle motor nerve fibers are the axons of somatic motor neurons whose cell bodies reside in the ventral horn of the spinal cord or certain cranial nerve nuclei. These nerve fibers project through peripheral nerves to innervate skeletal muscle fibers, forming the efferent limb of the neuromuscular system. Each motor nerve fiber, when it terminates, forms a neuromuscular junction with one or more muscle fibers (collectively called a motor unit). These motor nerve fibers transmit action potentials that, upon arrival at the neuromuscular junction, cause the release of acetylcholine and trigger muscle contraction[1][2][6]. As anatomical rather than molecular entities, they are essential for voluntary movement, postural control, and reflex arcs but are not classified as individual druggable molecular targets. Note: The related molecular target at this junction is typically the acetylcholine receptor (AChR), a transmembrane ligand-gated ion channel at the neuromuscular junction, rather than the nerve fiber itself[1]. The term "skeletal muscle motor nerve fiber" is therefore not an appropriate entry for a molecular target database.
