Overview
The skin barrier, primarily located in the stratum corneum, is a complex structure responsible for protecting underlying tissues and retaining moisture. It consists of corneocytes embedded in a lipid matrix (ceramides, cholesterol, and free fatty acids), along with Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF). Disruption of the skin barrier leads to increased transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and various dermatological conditions.
