While they are essential for treating dermatological conditions such as xerosis and atopic dermatitis by restoring the skin's barrier function, they act through physicochemical mechanisms on the skin surface rather than through targeted molecular signaling (Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology, 2014). Consequently, this term identifies a substance's utility in a formulation rather than a discrete molecular entity for drug development. Because it is a functional category of chemicals and not a biological molecule, it is not considered a therapeutic target in the traditional pharmacological sense.
