Overview

Skin epithelial cells are the predominant cell type forming the outermost layer of the skin, known as the epidermis[1][3][2]. The primary type of skin epithelial cell is the keratinocyte, which originates in the basal layer, proliferates and differentiates as it migrates outward, and ultimately forms the stratum corneum that creates the physical barrier preventing water loss and entry of pathogens[3][1][2]. Skin epithelial cells possess properties such as polarity, tight junctions, and regenerative capacity, and fulfill essential roles in protection, secretion (in glandular structures), sensation, and repair, contributing critically to immune defenses and tissue homeostasis[1][2][3][5][6]. Although dysregulation of these cells is implicated in diseases such as cancer or inflammatory conditions, “skin epithelial cell” is a generic term and not a molecular or receptor target suitable for direct drug targeting.
