Skin keratin and cutaneous microbiota represent the complex interface between the host's structural proteins and the diverse community of microorganisms inhabiting the skin surface (StatPearls, 2023; Nature Reviews Microbiology, 2018). Keratins are intermediate filament proteins that provide mechanical stability and barrier integrity to the epidermis, while the microbiota consists of bacteria, fungi, and viruses that play a crucial role in immune education and pathogen defense (NIH, 2022).
