Target intelligence / Profile preview
The skin microbiota composition refers to the complex ecosystem of bacteria, fungi, viruses, and mites that reside on the human skin surface and within its appendages. This microbial community is essential for skin health, contributing to the physical barrier and educating the innate and adaptive immune systems (Byrd et al., 2018, Nature Reviews Microbiology). It prevents the colonization of pathogens through niche competition and the secretion of antimicrobial substances (Grice & Segre, 2011, Nature Reviews Microbiology). Disruptions in the microbial balance, or dysbiosis, are strongly associated with the pathogenesis of inflammatory skin diseases like atopic dermatitis and acne (Kong et al., 2012, Genome Research). Pharmacological and dermo-cosmetic interventions often target this composition to reduce pathogen load or promote the growth of beneficial commensals (Dréno et al., 2016, Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology). As a therapeutic target, it represents a shift toward ecological management of skin health rather than simple pathogen eradication.
Modulation of microbial diversity and relative abundance of commensal versus pathogenic species to restore skin homeostasis and barrier integrity (Dréno et al., 2016, JEADV).
