Overview

It involves the interplay of several key components including the natural moisturizing factor (NMF), stratum corneum intercellular lipids (ceramides, cholesterol, free fatty acids), glycerol, hyaluronic acid, and aquaporins. These components work together to bind water, regulate transepidermal water loss (TEWL), and maintain the skin's barrier function. Impaired moisture retention is implicated in various dermatological conditions like atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, and xerosis, as well as age-related skin changes.
