Because it encompasses a broad array of cell types and signaling pathways rather than a single protein, it is considered a physiological system rather than a discrete molecular drug target. Therapeutic interventions often focus on specific nodes within this system, such as TRPV1 or neuropeptide receptors, to modulate sensory output and inflammatory responses.
