Overview

“Skin pathogen inhibition” refers to the complex set of biological, chemical, and microbiological mechanisms by which the skin and its resident microbiota suppress colonization and growth of pathogenic microorganisms. This includes the action of host-derived antimicrobial peptides, acidic pH, commensal microbes (such as Staphylococcus epidermidis and lactobacilli) producing antimicrobial substances or competing for resources, and immunological barriers such as the production of cytokines and AMPs by keratinocytes and fibroblasts[2][4][5][7]. Rather than representing a single defined therapeutic target, “skin pathogen inhibition” encompasses a broad collection of immune, barrier, and microbial-protective functions that can be modulated therapeutically but do not correspond to a singular molecular entity or defined receptor.
