Overview

Skin proteins are a diverse group of molecules that play essential roles in the structure, function, and health of the skin. The most prominent skin proteins include collagen, elastin, and keratin. These structural proteins provide mechanical strength, elasticity, protection, and support for cellular activities within the skin. Alterations or deficiencies in these key proteins contribute to aging signs (wrinkles/sagging), poor wound healing, genetic diseases like Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (collagen defects), ichthyosis (keratin defects), as well as increased susceptibility to infections or inflammatory conditions such as eczema or psoriasis. Proteomic research continues identifying thousands more less-characterized skin-associated proteins involved in signaling pathways relevant to disease processes including cancer.
