Skin-resident immune cells comprise a heterogeneous population of leukocytes that permanently reside in the skin and are essential for maintaining immune surveillance, barrier protection, and homeostatic regulation. Major subsets include Langerhans cells (dendritic cells of the epidermis), dermal dendritic cells, macrophages, various subsets of resident T cells (including tissue-resident memory T cells), innate lymphoid cells (ILCs), mast cells, and, to a lesser degree, B cells and NK cells[1][2][5]. These cells can initiate and modulate responses to pathogens, contribute to wound healing, regulate inflammation, and play roles in the development of skin diseases such as psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and other inflammatory disorders[1][2][4][5]. They interact with non-immune skin cells (e.g., keratinocytes, fibroblasts) and with each other, forming a dynamic immune network in the skin.
