Skin water retention mechanisms, primarily through the humectant effect, are the biological processes that enable the skin, particularly the stratum corneum, to attract, bind, and retain water. This involves the Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF), intercellular lipids (especially ceramides), humectants like glycerol and hyaluronic acid, aquaporins for water transport, and tight junctions for regulating paracellular water movement. The primary mechanism involves attracting moisture via humectants, retaining it within corneocytes via NMF, and preventing excessive evaporation through the lipid matrix. Dysregulation leads to dryness and skin conditions like atopic dermatitis.
Humectants attract water from the atmosphere or deeper skin layers into the stratum corneum. Occlusives create a barrier to prevent transepidermal water loss. Emollients fill spaces between skin cells to improve texture and barrier function. NMF components bind and retain water within corneocytes.
