Overview

SLAM family member 5 (SLAMF5, CD84) is a cell-surface type I transmembrane glycoprotein and member of the SLAM (Signaling lymphocytic activation molecule) family of receptors within the immunoglobulin superfamily. SLAMF5 is expressed on a wide range of hematopoietic cells, including CD34+ progenitors, B and T lymphocytes, monocytes, and macrophages. This receptor plays important roles in modulating immune cell interactions, regulating lymphocyte development and signaling, supporting regulatory B cell function, and influencing apoptosis in T cells through adaptor proteins such as SAP. SLAMF5 can self-associate (homophilic interaction), contributing to the formation of immunological synapses and signal transduction between immune cells. It has relevance in the maintenance of immune tolerance and has been linked to diseases such as cancer, autoimmune disorders, and hematological pathologies. Although no approved drugs currently target SLAMF5 directly, its role in immune cell regulation makes it a potentially valuable therapeutic target[1][2][3][4][5][6].
