Overview

SLC12A5 and MMP9 antisense RNA 1 (SLC12A5-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) categorized as an antisense transcript. It is transcribed from the opposite strand of the SLC12A5 and MMP9 gene loci and does not encode a protein[2][5][6]. Like other antisense lncRNAs, it is believed to participate in regulation of gene expression, potentially through epigenetic mechanisms and modulation of its sense gene partners[3][4]. Such antisense transcripts can act either in cis (affecting neighboring genes) or in trans (distant effects), and are increasingly identified as having roles in cancer biology—by modulating the expression of oncogenes or tumor suppressors[3]. SLC12A5-AS1 is *not* a cellular receptor, enzyme, or transporter, and is not currently considered a direct drug target. While some database associations link it to familial thoracic aortic aneurysm, its function and clinical roles remain largely undefined. Common aliases include RP11-465L10.10. No drugs are known to target this lncRNA, and it is not an established biomarker or therapeutic target[5][6].
