It forms complexes with transcription factors such as E2F1, facilitating upregulation of SLC16A1/MCT1 and genes like PPARA, thus promoting a metabolic phenotype favoring cancer cell invasiveness. SLC16A1-AS1 is regulated in a cancer-type-specific manner and acts by modulating microRNAs and gene stability, making it a promising biomarker and candidate therapeutic target in oncology. It does not encode a protein and is not a classical drug target (such as receptor or enzyme), but may be targeted by RNA therapeutics.
