Overview

SLC1A3 antisense RNA 1 (SLC1A3-AS1) is a human long noncoding RNA transcribed from the SLC1A3 locus. It is not a protein-coding gene, but instead functions in gene regulation, particularly as a competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA) by sequestering specific microRNAs (e.g., miR-486-5p), resulting in the upregulation of genes such as E2F transcription factor 6. SLC1A3-AS1 is overexpressed in certain cancers, including nasopharyngeal carcinoma, and its elevated levels correlate with increased tumor aggressiveness and poorer patient outcomes[2]. There is no evidence that it acts as a transporter, receptor, enzyme, or transcription factor, and it is not a recognized drug target[2]. If you intended to refer to SLC1A3 (solute carrier family 1 member 3), which is a well-studied aspartate/glutamate transporter protein, that is a distinct target and should not be confused with SLC1A3-AS1[1][3].

Biological functions

Gene regulation (functions as a competitive endogenous RNA, or ceRNA, modulating the effects of microRNAs on target gene translation[2])
03

Disease associations

Cancer (nasopharyngeal carcinoma; associated with poorer prognosis and increased tumor cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and reduced apoptosis[2])
04

Biomarkers

High SLC1A3-AS1 expression is associated with poor prognosis in nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients[2]
