SLC25A21 antisense RNA 1 (SLC25A21-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA transcribed in an antisense orientation to the SLC25A21 gene. It regulates gene expression through interactions with microRNAs (as a competing endogenous RNA), modulates mRNA stability, and protein degradation. SLC25A21-AS1 is upregulated in several cancers—such as nasopharyngeal carcinoma, where it drives multidrug resistance and poor prognosis by sponging miR-324-3p and increasing IL-6. In ovarian cancer, it suppresses proliferation and metastasis by promoting degradation of PTBP3. Its expression correlates with disease severity and has potential as a prognostic biomarker and therapeutic target.
Acts as a molecular sponge (ceRNA) for miR-324-3p, leading to increased expression of IL-6 and MDR in nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Promotes PTBP3 protein degradation by the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway in ovarian cancer, inhibiting proliferation and metastasis. Increases SLC25A21 mRNA stability and impacts tryptophan catabolism in esophageal cancer.
