SLC25A5 antisense RNA 1 (SLC25A5-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) transcribed in the antisense orientation to the SLC25A5 gene. It does not encode a protein but serves key regulatory roles in cancer biology[1][6]. SLC25A5-AS1 expression is downregulated in several cancer types, including gastric cancer and kidney renal clear cell carcinoma, and this reduced expression is associated with tumor progression, increased proliferation, and poor prognosis[1][2][6]. Experimental evidence suggests SLC25A5-AS1 acts as a tumor suppressor by inhibiting cell proliferation, inducing cell cycle arrest, and promoting apoptosis. Mechanistically, it modulates cancer cell behavior predominantly by acting as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA), sponging miR-19a-3p, thereby derepressing PTEN and inhibiting the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway[1][6]. SLC25A5-AS1 has been proposed as a candidate prognostic biomarker for gastric and kidney cancer, though there are currently no drugs that directly target it[1][2][6].
