Overview

SLC39A13 antisense RNA 1 (SLC39A13-AS1), also known as LOUP or “long noncoding RNA originating from the URE of PU.1,” is a long noncoding RNA transcribed antisense to the SLC39A13 locus and upstream of the transcription factor PU.1 (encoded by SPI1). SLC39A13-AS1/LOUP functions as a regulatory RNA controlling the expression of PU.1, a master regulator of myeloid development, by acting specifically in myeloid lineages to enable efficient transcriptional activation of PU.1 from a distal enhancer. It is not a protein, receptor, or “druggable” target in the classical sense, but it does modulate critical biological processes governing hematopoietic differentiation and has implications for hematopoietic cancers and immune cell development. In summary, SLC39A13-AS1 is a functionally relevant lncRNA, central to the regulation of PU.1, with emerging possible roles in cancer biology, but is not a classical target such as a small-molecule receptor or enzyme. No therapeutics or drugs presently target this RNA.
