SLC6A12 antisense RNA 1 (SLC6A12-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) classified as an antisense transcript to the protein-coding gene SLC6A12, which encodes the sodium- and chloride-dependent betaine transporter[4][8]. SLC6A12-AS1 is not a protein-coding gene and does not encode any receptor, transporter, or enzyme. Instead, as an antisense lncRNA, it is presumed—by analogy with numerous characterized antisense RNAs—to possibly regulate the expression of its sense partner gene (SLC6A12), most likely through mechanisms such as influencing mRNA stability, transcriptional regulation, or chromatin modification, though no direct experimental evidence is currently published for SLC6A12-AS1 specifically[3][6]. There are no reports that SLC6A12-AS1 is a direct disease gene, therapeutic target, or biomarker, and no drugs are known to interact with it.
