Overview

SLC9A9 antisense RNA 1 (SLC9A9-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) transcribed in the antisense direction from the SLC9A9 gene locus. It does not encode a protein. SLC9A9-AS1 has been shown to function as a competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA), acting by sequestering specific microRNAs (miRNAs) and thereby modulating the expression of downstream genes. For example, in nasopharyngeal carcinoma, SLC9A9-AS1 sponges miR-486-5p, leading to upregulation of E2F transcription factor 6 (E2F6), promoting cancer cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and suppressing apoptosis[2]. Elevated SLC9A9-AS1 expression is associated with poorer survival in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Its role as a ceRNA links it to oncogenesis and suggests potential utility as a biomarker or diagnostic tool in cancer settings[2][3]. However, SLC9A9-AS1 is not a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or typical therapeutic target, but an RNA-based regulator implicated in the modification of disease processes[3][4].
