Overview

SMAD1 antisense RNA 1 (SMAD1-AS1) is a long noncoding RNA transcript located antisense to the SMAD1 gene locus in the human genome[3]. It belongs to the class of natural antisense transcripts (NATs) that may regulate gene expression at the RNA level—either by forming duplexes with sense transcripts, modulating stability, influencing splicing, or indirectly affecting transcription of neighboring genes[4]. While the biological and pathological roles of some antisense lncRNAs are well-characterized, specific functional roles for SMAD1-AS1 remain incompletely defined and require further experimental validation. No drugs are known to target SMAD1-AS1 directly, and it is not currently considered a canonical therapeutic target. Its precise impact on SMAD1 function or disease remains unclear in current literature[3].
