SCARNA23
Molecular classification
Small Cajal body-specific RNA (scaRNA), Non-coding RNA, Box H/ACA RNA

Overview

Small Cajal body-specific RNA 23 (SCARNA23) is a non-coding RNA of the box H/ACA class, specifically localized to Cajal bodies within the nucleus. SCARNA23 is believed to guide the post-transcriptional modification of spliceosomal RNAs transcribed by RNA polymerase II, most notably U1 small nuclear RNA, through pseudouridylation (the conversion of uridine to pseudouridine)[2][1][7]. Like other scaRNAs, SCARNA23 plays an essential role in the maturation and modification of snRNAs necessary for mRNA splicing in eukaryotic cells[1][5]. While no direct involvement in disease or therapeutics is currently documented for SCARNA23, similar molecules have shown relevance as cancer biomarkers[4][6].
