Small Cajal body-specific RNA 4 (SCARNA4, also called ACA26) is a non-coding RNA of the H/ACA box snoRNA class that is specifically localized in the Cajal bodies within the cell nucleus. SCARNA4 functions as a guide RNA for the pseudouridylation (conversion of uridine to pseudouridine) of specific uridines (notably U39 and U41) in the U2 spliceosomal small nuclear RNA (snRNA), a key component of the major spliceosome machinery. This modification is important for proper snRNA maturation and efficient pre-mRNA splicing. Like other scaRNAs, SCARNA4 is essential for RNA processing but is not itself a protein-coding gene, nor is it a typical druggable therapeutic target. Emerging evidence links SCARNA4 expression and its small RNA derivatives to cancer biology and immune modulation, supporting utility as a potential biomarker in research, but direct targeting by medical drugs is not established.
