Overview

Small Cajal body-specific RNA 8 (SCARNA8, also known as U92) is a small, non-coding, H/ACA box RNA that localizes to Cajal bodies within the nucleus. Its primary function is to guide the site-specific pseudouridylation (conversion of uridine to pseudouridine) of U2 spliceosomal RNA at a defined nucleotide position by forming an RNA-protein complex with associated factors such as GAR1. SCARNA8 is part of a broader class called scaRNAs, which are vital for the maturation and chemical modification of spliceosomal snRNAs (including U1, U2, U4, U5, and U12), thus ensuring proper splicing of pre-mRNA. Although scaRNAs are essential for cellular RNA processing and spliceosome function, SCARNA8 itself is not a therapeutic target and has no direct links to disease mechanisms or drug actions.
