Overview

Small conductance calcium-activated potassium channel 1 (SK1) is a calcium-activated potassium channel encoded by the KCNN1 gene. SK channels are tetrameric complexes, each formed from four alpha subunits and activated by intracellular calcium binding to calmodulin. Activation leads to membrane hyperpolarization, inhibiting further cell firing and regulating neuronal excitability and synaptic plasticity. They are expressed throughout the central nervous system, cardiac tissue, and other excitable cells. Altered expression or function has been implicated in several conditions, including chronic atrial fibrillation and neurodevelopmental/psychiatric disorders.
