Small conductance calcium-activated potassium channel protein 1 (KCNN1), also known as KCa2.1 or SK1, is a voltage-independent, calcium-activated potassium channel. It is expressed in neurons and cardiac tissue, regulating neuronal excitability and potentially influencing atrial electrophysiology. KCNN1 mediates potassium ion transfer in response to intracellular calcium increases, contributing to the afterhyperpolarization (AHP) that regulates neuronal firing. Alterations have been implicated in pain modulation, cancer, and arrhythmogenesis. Apamin blocks KCNN1 activity.
