Overview

KCNN2, also known as KCa2.2 or SK2, is a member of the small conductance calcium-activated potassium channel family. It encodes an integral membrane protein that forms a voltage-independent, calcium-activated potassium channel. This channel plays a crucial role in regulating neuronal excitability by mediating the transmembrane transfer of potassium ions in response to increases in intracellular calcium concentration, leading to membrane hyperpolarization following action potentials and contributing to the slow component of synaptic afterhyperpolarization (AHP) in neurons. Dysregulation has been linked to anxiety and Angelman syndrome.
