Overview

Small EDRK-rich factor 1B is a small, mostly unstructured, protein encoded by the SERF1B gene on chromosome 5q13. It is a positive regulator of amyloid protein aggregation and proteotoxicity, capable of inducing conformational changes in amyloidogenic proteins such as APP, huntingtin, and alpha-synuclein, thus accelerating their aggregation and potentially contributing to neurodegenerative disease processes. SERF1B is localised to both the cytosol and nucleus and is paralogous to SERF1A. The gene lies in a complex genomic region subject to duplication and rearrangement. Its molecular function is not completely understood, but it has low homology to RNA-binding domains and interacts with protein complexes involved in amyloid fibril formation[1][3][4].
