Small Hydrophobic Protein of Respiratory Syncytial Virus A (SH)

Target
SH
Molecular classification
Viroporin, Type II transmembrane protein
01

Overview

The small hydrophobic (SH) protein is a viral protein encoded by the human respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), specifically in subgroup A strains. It consists of 64 amino acids and functions as a pH-dependent ion channel (viroporin). The SH protein inhibits apoptosis, modulates host cell secretory pathways, and can inhibit tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF‐α) signaling. It is not essential for viral entry or syncytium formation but contributes to full virulence. Inhibitors like pyronin B block channel activity, suggesting a potential antiviral drug target.
