Overview

Small integral membrane protein 11 (SMIM11) is a protein of 58 amino acids with a predicted molecular weight of 6 kDa, encoded by the SMIM11 gene located on chromosome 21 in humans[1][5][10]. It is predicted and experimentally localized to membranes, including the cytoplasm, mitochondria, and focal adhesions, and contains a single transmembrane domain[1]. SMIM11 is expressed in multiple tissues, with highest mRNA levels observed in the brain, thyroid, and stomach, and detectable in heart, spleen, liver, muscle, lung, testis, skin, blood, and bone marrow[1][6][12]. The exact physiological role and protein partners of SMIM11 remain unknown, with no paralogs, no confirmed interacting proteins, and no direct link established to therapeutic targeting or disease mechanisms[1][3][4][8]. SMIM11 thus represents a small, conserved, uncharacterized integral membrane protein that is not currently considered a therapeutic target.
